Let the MBA Help You Get Your Last Minute CLE

By Stacie Winkler, MBA CLE Committee Co-Chair

As the year comes to a close and the holidays approach, you are probably faced with an overwhelming number of tasks to accomplish. Hopefully for the Memphis Bar Association, one of those tasks is to get your remaining CLE hours! The Memphis Bar offers CLEs on a variety of topics in every type of format that an attorney could want or need.

For those of you who are inclined to attend the traditional "in person" CLEs, the Memphis Bar has the "Buy the Hour" CLE scheduled for December 29. It will be held at One Commerce Square, starting at 8:30 am. For those of you who have not attended this particular CLE, it allows you to attend all day if you need the credit, or buy each individual hour as needed. The topics are varied and range from fee agreements, to conservatorships, to summary judgment in Tennessee. It also includes two hours of ethics credit. Another seminar of note is "Legal Ethics in the Movies," which is scheduled for December 28. This CLE will be presented by Mike McLaren at the Memphis Bioworks Auditorium. The CLE is certainly an entertaining one, allowing attorneys to watch movie clips depicting ethical issues in the law. It is one of the most entertaining ways to obtain ethics hours. Other seminars include Why Pro Bono is Good Business, How to Manage Receivables in Today's Economy, and Insurance Errors & Omissions

If you are not particularly inclined to attend these "in person" CLEs, you of course have the option to view CLEs online through the Memphis Bar Association. Tennessee attorneys are allowed to obtain 8 of their 15 hours through long distance learning, i.e. via the computer. Over the past year, the MBA CLE Committee as worked to offer additional "long distance" CLEs for the convenience of its members. Both live webcasts and online videos are available. Online videos can be watched at any time. Live webcasts, as the name suggests, are scheduled for particular times, but still provide the convenience of online viewing.

The current online videos offered include: Disaster Legal Assistance, FMLA Compliance: What Employers Need to Know, 2011 Tort Reform Act, A Review of Current Topics in EEOC Litigation, Effective Presentations; Everything I Know About Neuro-Science & Conflict Resolution, Family Forum of Experts, How to Do Good When You Don't Have a Clue, RPC 2.0: The 2011 Revisions to Tennessee's Legal Ethics Rules and Rethinking the Practice of Law. Each of these CLEs was previously offered as a live CLE earlier this year. They are now available to be viewed online.

Finally, the live webcasts being offered include Lincoln on Professionalism and Clarence Darrow: Crimes, Causes and the Courtroom. Dates and times for these programs are available on the MBA website, along with instructions for registering.
